WSET Wine Course Information
We currently offer the following courses, held at The Westbury Hotel, Dublin.
Level 1 Foundation - Trade

The Level 1 Certificate qualification provides a basic introduction to the main styles of wines available to frontline staff involved in the sale of wine. The qualification introduces candidates to the techniques of tasting wines and the characteristics of the common grape varieties used to produce wines.
For employers this course aims to equip your staff with a basic level of product knowledge suitable for their first job in wine sales and service.
To gain the Level 1 qualification candidates will be required to:
- Complete a programme of training
- Successfully complete a multiple-choice paper of 30 questions and a portfolio of tasting notes.

Level 1 Foundation Consumer

Most of us cooking for friends and loved ones struggle when it comes to deciding what wines to serve with the meal. We struggle when buying wine, faced with a wall of labels and not knowing what style they represent.
This course is a good introductory first course for the wine enthusiast who whishes to be introduced in a structured way to wine styles, storing and serving of wine, plus food and wine matching.
To gain the Level 1 qualification candidates will be required to:
- Complete a programme of training

Level 2 Intermediate in Wines & Spirits

This qualification offers broad coverage of all product categories in the field of alcoholic drinks, together with the theory of tasting technique. It is suitable for those with little previous experience.
Qualification objectives
On completion of this qualification a candidate will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the factors that influence the main styles of wine
- Describe the characteristics of the principal grape varieties
- Use the key terms on a bottle label to deduce the style and flavours of wines made from principal grape varieties and regions
- Apply principles of food and wine matching to the key styles of wine available
- Use the WSETฎ Systematic Approach to Tasting to produce descriptions of wines
- Provide information on health issues relating to wines and spirits
- Provide information and advice on the correct storage and service of wines and spirits.

Level 2 Intermediate in Wines & Spirits Distance Learning

Tindal Wine Merchants also offer an online distance learning option for the wine enthusiast who wishes to study for pleasure and for those who wish to gain a WSET qualification but find that it is difficult to attend regular classes.
The online course follows a 5 week study programme with set start and finish dates, based on the Intermediate specification.
Each week consists of a series of online activities, often based around group discussion with an online tutor allocated to guide the students studies.

Level 3 Advanced

The Level 3 Advanced Certificate gives more comprehensive coverage of the wines and spirits of the world, with an increased focus on tasting technique.
Qualification objectives
On completion of this qualification a candidate will be able to:
- Explain the key factors influencing the production of the principal wines and spirits of the world and how those factors influence the style, quality and price
- Describe in detail the characteristics of the principal wines and spirits of the world
- Use knowledge of the principal wines and spirits of the world to make recommendations to customers in a variety of situations
- Apply the principles of food and wine matching to the key styles of wine available
- By the use of the WSETฎ Systematic Approach to Tasting, produce tasting notes and use the information contained within them to identify the style, quality and price band of wines and spirits
- Provide information for customers and staff on the health issues relating to wines and spirits
- Provide information and advice for customers and staff on the correct storage and service of wines and spirits
